Dynamic Formation of a Transient Jet from Arched Magnetized Laboratory Plasma

Abstract A laboratory plasma experiment was built to explore the eruptive behavior of arched magnetized plasmas with dimensionless parameters relevant Sun’s photosphere ( β ≈ 10 −3 , Lundquist number ≈10 4 radius/ion gyroradius ≈20, ion–neutral collision frequency ≫ion cyclotron frequency). Dynamic formation a transient jet observed in presence strapping magnetic field. The eruption leading is unintuitive because both kink- and torus-stable. structure erupts within few Alfvén transit times from plasma. Extensive measurements temperature, density, field, flows are presented. In its early stages, away arch supersonic speeds (Mach 1.5). This high-speed flow persists up resistive diffusion time driven by large gradients thermal pressures near birthplace jets. There two distinct electric current channels jet, one consisting outgoing electrons another composed returning anode footpoint.
